Go ahead and ask!
Welcome to “Ask Us.”The Lexington Herald-Leader news research staff will sleuth out an answer for you — or at least we will tell you where you can get the answer. It can be tricky to navigate a a sea of information filled with misinformation, partial information and flat-out lies. The Internet is fraught with falsehoods. We will give you answers from reliable sources.
But first, we need your questions.
E-mail them to Lu-Ann Farrar. You can also leave a reply below.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
What should a small business do with discarded computer equipment? I know periodically LFUCG allows households to turn in old equipment at the old Furrow’s building, but what if a person has numerous computer items to get rid of?
How did UK and/or their third party obtain a new certificate of need (CON)for the proposed nursing home/assisted living campus that has recently been in the news? Neither UK or the third party is listed as a current nursing home certificate of need holder. Was there a public hearing or process on file? Two interesting notes: 1. There are no new CONs being issued by the state. 2. An existing holder may apply for additional beds in counties where a need has been identified. Fayette and Jessamine have not been identified.
Who was UK Wildcats football coach in 1977?
When was last time UK football in top 10?
Recently, I’ve been going asleep to the sound of a very loud helicopter circling the UK / Ashland / Woodland Park area… it seems to do it at least once or twice a week, and is doing it as I type this right now.
What is it doing out there, circling non-stop? Why is it so loud?
I have many old phone books I would like to recycle. Where do I do this. We are not on city pick up, have M&M service. Thanks.
Wyhere can I buy some Uneeda Biscuits
Why does Lexington not enforce the sign laws? The little signs for real estate, furniture, scalpers, etc. are making this city look trashy. they are placed everywhere. These cheap forms of advertisments are illegal under Lexington City Laws.
can u tell me about a musical group called the magnificent 7 . from lexington in the sixetyies and if they had recorded any records. ty
As I travel down Man o’ War Boulevard from Tates Creek Road toward Nicholasville Road, I notice they are moving dirt, staking out land and perhaps getting ready to put in infrastructure on the left (just past Waterford/Clearwater Way). What is planned for this land? Are they getting ready to build more houses?
I want to do cross-country skiing around Lexington. Do you know any trail that I could take?
I just came back to Lexington after moving away a couple of months ago, and I noticed that a lot of the BP gas stations have their signs covered up, and some of them have red stars with the letter E on them.
What’s the deal? None of them are taking BP credit cards either, but they’re still painted green and most of them still have BP logos on the pumps.
In old pictures of the UK campus, there appears to be a large pond in the area where Euclid intersects with S. Limestone. It’s difficult in the pictures to tell the dimensions of the pond, though its clearly big enough for rowers to be out on it. Any idea on the dimensions of this pond, when it was dredged and for what reasons?
Do you know of anywhere that leases small plots of land to raise a garden on? I’m looking for something roughly 20′x30′ or so, not that much.
What is the point of the new double red lights appearing around town? I don’t really believe that two red lights will reduce red-light running any more than one light. They are currently appearing at Nicholasville at Man O War, Nicholasville at New Circle and Vine at Broadway.
Whatever happened to the Clays Mill Road widening? I thought it was to start in 2006
I have been curious about an old house (with newer additions) at 937 Lane Allen Road. The house sits perpendicular to Lane Allen. What is the history of the house? What road accessed the house originally? The JIames Lane Allen house is up the road.
A building at the corner of Lyndhurst Place and Rose Street has a white tile swastika centered at the top of the building. What’s the story behind the swastika?
Can you tell me anything about the hotel and BP station under construction on US 27 south of Nicholasville (near the ballpark)?
It seems that construction has stopped??
Do you know the name of the very enthuastic towel boy that works at all the UK basketball games? He is normally stationed under the basket closets to the eRupption Zone and gets a good round of applause for a job well done at almost every home game. I’ve also seen him on TV at several of the away games, which makes me think he must be the son/grandson/nephew of someone connected to the team.
I wonder why the Democrats need more delgates to win the nomination than the republicans? Why aren’t the numbers the same? Who decides the total needed?
DEMOCRATS
2,025 needed to win
REPUBLICANS
1,191 needed to win
A few months back, I submitted a question regarding how the University obtained their certificate of need for the Limestone Crossing nursing home project. You had referred it to someone else at the Herald Leader, but I have not heard anything back.
I see the advertisements in the paper and was curious. UK was not listed as a holder of a CON for long term care services.
Sincerely,
Ed Straw
I have twice asked about the building on the north corner of Rose Street and Lyndhurst Place that has a swastika tiled into the parapet. Should I assume the question is not worthy of an answer?
What about this?
I am interested in the swastika tiled into the building on the north corner of Rose Street and Lyndhurst Place. How should I go about investigating the history of the building?
What’s up with the airforce jet at BGA? Just hanging out? Dropping off tin foil hats?
Why do we have so many delinquent taxes and people like Ball Homes and Anderson, et cetera all have multiple bills pending? Why can’t these be collected? Is there no one to collect these before they become late? If I am late in paying my taxes, I’m sure someone would be on my doorstep.
What is the cylindrical tower in front of the UK Chem-Physics Building?
We live in Lexington but do not have city trash pickup. Our private pickup firm does not recycle glass. Is there some place in Lexington where we can drop off glass to recycle?
When a bill is signed into a law in Frankfort by the governor, why doesn’t the law take effect immediately instead of going into effect in July?
Elizabeth,
I can answer that one for you. Since glass is made out of sand and there is no shortage of sand, recyclers are not taking glass items since there is no cost effective way to recycle it.
Any news on when the Parkette will reopen (if ever)? The new owners said they would reopen for Spring but there has been no new (apparent) activity at the location in quite some time.
Thanks in advance!
My question: At the corner of Man O’War and
Richmond Rd there is a lot of activity going on…
i.e.; dirt moving and clearing of land. What is going
to take place there…..houses, business…?
Just curiours because there are not signs indicating
what is going to be built on the corner.
Thanks for your answer. I’ll be watching to see
the answer in the Herald.
So I’m a big fan of M&Ms and haven’t been able to find the Crispy M&Ms variety in a while. I checked the Mars Web site and they’re no longer listed, but they’re apparently still sold in the United Kingdom. Any chance you could talk with the media people at Mars and solve the riddle of the missing crispies?
Many news agencies are reporting the current flooding in the upper-midwest as a 500-year flood. While I know Lexington’s topography is different, we are fairly low lying and definitely slow to drain, so what would 500-year flood look like in Lexington/Central Kentucky. How does this compare to last memorable major flooding event in the fall of 2006? I heard that was a 100 year flood.
Can you check with someone in regards to electronic recycling in Fayette Co.? Is it still only offered at certain times during the year, or is it year-round? I recycled a few old electronics items a few years ago at the old Furrow’s Building (which is now owned by the country) out on Versailles Road. Thanks!
Hello there,
I was wondering how far away from a stop sign one should park and if there were any laws pertaining to that in particular? In my neighborhood, several people park their cars on the same side, mere feet away from a stop sign and this has always seemed dangerous.
Thanks!
Natalie
I just want to thank you for the reference to recycling books and records at Friends Book Cellar. We are in our tenth year as a retail gently used book store in the Lexington Public Library and appreciate all donations.
Thanks to a super management team and volunteer workers we have been able to provide more than $500,000 in program support by selling donated books, records, tapes, etc. We are open 9-6 Mon-Th and 9-4 Fri-Sat. All donations are very welcome..
I purchased my digital TV – antenna converter box a month or so ago. I can get all the network stations as well some others that I couldn’t pick up before, but I no longer receive Fox 56. I’ve called them twice and they suggested setting my TV on a different channel. I’ve tried channels 3 and 4 as well as the ‘video’ setting, and Fox does not register on any of them. Are there any other options?
Why do I have to register to see the news on Kentucky.com?
I can’t tell you how many times, I as a motorist, have had to slow or stop to allow pedestrians to cross between Limestone and S. Martin Luther King. People will find the shortest means to get from one place to another and unfortunately in this case it is dangerous for both pedestrians and motorists. Let’s make Lexington a more walkable city. Why has the city not addressed the dangerous crosswalk (or lack thereof) to the Lextran hub on Vine Street?
Is it against the law for and person that had no ties with Obama to make a post on the Straw polls giving Obama’s web site for donations. This is posted at least 50 timed a day. I thought it was illegal for someone to ask for money without permission from the State or someone that gives permission. The person goes by the name ( VOICE OF REASON) and (MICHELLE)
On the Goodwill article,,I have a friend who worked for the company who picked Goodwills trash up , and he said it was horrific to see what they had thrown away. Bags and bags of stuff that had not even been sorted through. This wasn’t moldly clothes or broken items,,it was donated items that they just didn’t even go through. I would like to know who they recycle through. It certainly wasn’t the company who picked up their trash. And it wasn’t just once that he picked it up..He was there several times and it was always the same thing..That is part of the reason why I never donate anything to Goodwill….never have and never will.
Thank you..
What’s up with the “Are you prepared for a disaster” signs near Central Baptist hospital? Are they part of the same sort of commercials that Homeland Security is running?
My wife recently purchased a small broken flip-top wood utility table at a yard sale. Painted over on bottom are two metal tags stating C F Brower & Co. Incorporated, Lexington, Ky. It has one tag on bottom of the top, and one on stand (legs) It also has a series of numbers engraved on the bottom. Can you tell me anything about this company? When it existed etc.
I was wondering what were some good banks for regular day to day banking for a teen? They can be in Lexington, but preferably Winchester.
Thank You!
I was recently told that Govenor Beshear will be hiring out of state contractors for clean up and other repairs needed following recent ice storm using fema monies. How can I find out if this is true, and if it is, why in the world would the money not be kept in state. I’m sure there are plenty of contractors here in KY that not only can do the jobs necessary but need them.
I have searched for your coverage of the Bluegrass Tax Liberation Day rally held at Applebees’ Park on Saturday, April 18th.
You really should send someone to cover such events…you might learn something.
It was a great event with a great turnout and people are fired up. This is just the BEGINNING. We will continue until there is no breath left in us.
Where were you? I saw a Hillbilly Days article. Was everybody in Pikeville?
