Dispose of CFL blubs
I had replaced nearly every bulb in my house with a CFL (compact florescent lightbulb) before I learned they have mercury in them. I now have my first one that has blown out and can’t find anything on how to dispose of it. It does state that lots of towns have set up disposal sites. Does Lexington have one?
Currently, the city will accept the used CFL bulbs on days when the collect electronics waste at 1306 Versailles Road. The next time they will be collecting is Oct. 6 through Oct. 11, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. In the near future, the city is planning to accept this waste permanently, rather than on limited days.
Residents can also recycle unbroken compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) free of charge at all Home Depot locations anytime the stores are open. To find out more about this program click here.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
