More city sidewalks = gas savings
Question: If people are being encouraged to walk in order to be energy conscious, why aren’t there sidewalks along Tates Creek and Harrodsburg Roads? I could walk to work and shop if there were sidewalks along busy city streets in Lexington.
Answer: Kenzie Gleason with the city planning department informs us that:
“Yes, there are many roadways in Lexington that need sidewalks and the LFUCG wants to do all we can to encourage walking for errands, commuting and recreation. While we have long term plans to install sidewalks throughout the city, there are some projects planned in the near future for Harrodsburg Road and Tates Creek Road. The LFUCG has applied for grant funding through the KY Transportation Cabinet to install sidewalks on Tates Creek Road from where they currently end near Montclair Drive to the Lansdowne Shoppes at Dove Run Road. The KY Transportation Cabinet has a road improvement project planned for Harrodsburg Road that would install sidewalks on one or both sides of the road from Alexandria Drive to Beaumont Center Lane. Both of these projects are still in the planning or design phase.”

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
