City ordinances contain bicycle regulations
Question: Several years ago I checked with LPD about bike laws and was told they were essentially classified as motor vehicles, required to obey all traffic laws. Yet I see adult bikers “driving” on sidewalks, going down streets the wrong way, going thru stop signs and traffic lights. How are bike laws enforced in Lexington?
Answer: Lieutenant Dwayne Holman, Office of the Chief of Police for the city, answered this question:
“Section 18 (subsections 145-156) of the City Ordinances contain many of the bicycle regulations. Officers do enforce violations by cyclists when appropriate, with consideration given to a variety of factors. Bicycles on sidewalks are only expressively banned from the downtown district. Outside the downtown area, cyclists can ride on the sidewalk unless there is signage prohibiting that activity. As for the other cycling behavior listed, they are violations of city ordinances.”

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
