Question: What are the reddish-orange flowers blooming along the Bluegrass Parkway close to the Interstate 65 interchange near Elizabethtown? They’re gorgeous!
Answer: Mark Brown, public affairs officer with the Kentucky Department of Transportation says that most likely, the flowers referenced by the writer are Red Corn Poppy – an annual flower the Transportation Cabinet seeds (these were seeded last fall) at different locations. They are currently in bloom along the Bluegrass Parkway near Elizabethtown and along the Western Kentucky Parkway west and east of Leitchfield. Many describe these flowers as beautiful and generally we have good luck with them.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
I can’t wait for the World Equestrian Games. We’re getting ready for it here in Lexington, KY. I’ve just published a book about horses and horse farms in this area of the world, Horse Farms & Horse Tales of the Bluegrass.
