Newtown Pike road work
Question: We live on Newtown Pike south of Ironworks and little or nothing has been done to improve this road. It was torn up last summer for repairs and is still a mess. When will the road work be completed?
Answer: David Thacker, spokesman for the Kentucky Department of Transportation District 7, has the answer to your question:
The project referenced is the widening of Newtown Pike between Stanton Way and Ironworks Pike. This project involves the construction of a new two-lane roadway with paved and grass shoulders. The new roadway will be located just west of the existing Newtown Pike and will provide for wider driving lanes and the elimination of the sharp curve near Fasig-Tipton. This project also incorporates many of the context sensitive design techniques similar to what was used on Paris Pike. Example: The roadway is being constructed to follow the existing terrain, reconstruction of the dry-laid stone walls, stone facing on the new bridge, and preservation of the cemetery.
As with all construction projects, work does not take place during the winter months primarily due to temperatures. The project referenced has resumed, and crews are currently working to install drainage structures for the new roadway. In the coming week’s motorists and area residents can expect to see final grade work, construction of the stone roadbed, and asphalt surfacing work take place. We anticipate that the project will be complete by June 30. However, this date can be impacted by weather and other factors beyond our control.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
