Vine Street Park Project
Question: Congress Ben Chandler held a press conference recently along with Lexington May Jim Newberry, Lexington Vice Mayor Jim Gray and other dignitaries to announce an appropriation of $500,000 which was part of the HUD Transportation bill to be used for the revitalization of downtown including the Vine Street Linear Park. Rep. Chandler is a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. My question is what is involved in the Vine Street Linear Park and what other appropriations are included in the HUD Transportation bill?
Answer: The complete text of the HUD Transportation bill can be found at the Library of Congress Thomas database site, select Search Bill Text by bill number. The bill number is H.R. 3074.
I found that a couple of architects are getting input from local residents on ideas for the entire downtown including improvements to sidewalks, roads and many more areas that need attention including ideas for the Vine St. Park project.
The findings on how citizens want downtown to look will be presented during a city Street Scrape meeting on Friday April 18.
And, the findings of this study will be combined with best practices from other states to help formulate a final plan for the Vine St. Linear Park.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
