When did Mulberry Street become Limestone Street?
Question: Was Limestone once named Mulberry Street? If so, what is the history behind the name and why was it changed to Limestone?
Answer: Your answer to this question comes from a previous Ask Us column run on December 1, 2004:
No definitive information is available regarding the change of the street name from Mulberry to Limestone. The following reference to the change was in the Lexington Morning Transcript, on October 14, 1887.
“A Suggestion to City Council
“The City Council has changed the name of Lower Street to Patterson Street. It would probably be good to change the name of Mulberry to Limestone in order to avoid confusion, as it is generally known by that name. Maysville was formerly called Limestone, and that street has the road going to that town.”

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
