Turquoise building was savings and loan
Question: I am intrigued by the little turquoise colored building on South Broadway between Maxwell and High Street. It is sandwiched between the parking garage and condominiums and looks as if it has been deserted for years. Who owns it and why has it been abandoned? Who designed the building?
Answer: The building is at 343 S. Broadway and is owned by Langley Properties. The 1965 Lexington City Directory lists the property as Peoples Federal Savings and Loan Association. In 1969 the bank was no longer listed at this address in the city directory. The building is referred to as the Cumberland Building and at one time also housed The Cumberland, a federal savings and loan association.
Langley Properties acquired the building as part of the Kentucky Central Life Insurance property sale. The building is available for lease but it is not for sale. The owners are waiting for the right user to come along and do something creative with this art deco style building.
The owner of Langley Properties never got back to us on the date of the building and the name of the architect.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
