Researching 1950 through 1954
Posted on January 15, 2008 by LuAnn Farrar
Are back issues of the Herald available on the Internet? Searchable? I’m interested in the years 1950-1954.
The only place to find the information you’re looking for is through the Lexington Public Library. Our online archive only goes back to 1983. The public library has a free, online index of our paper that goes back into the 1800s. It is searchable, and tends to focus on Lexington news, but it is only an index. You would then need to go to the Central branch of the library to see the full-text on microfilm. Here is the Lexington Public Library website for more information about their services and a link to the Local History Index.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
