Texting to lower pump prices

Question: Is there a gasoline station in Lexington that will give you a warning shortly before prices are set to rise so you can fill up in a hurry?
Answer: Yes, there is such a friendly station in town. In the May 2007 Herald-Leader, we wrote about Meijer which has started offering a program to alert customers of price increases. Customers who sign up for the Meijer Gas Alert program will receive text messages about two hours before the store raises its prices. The program started in Indianapolis and then Western Michigan before expanding nationwide.
I don’t know of any other similar programs around Lexington. But if you do, let us know and we will post it here.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
