A very old sign?

Question: At the corner of Lane Allen Rd. and Williamsburg Rd. there is a 4 foot concrete post that says “Cab Meter Limit.” What is that all about? I can remember many years ago that similiar posts were used as entrance signs to streets.Tom
Answer: I talked to a retired member of the city engineering department. He says that the signs on the posts were put up years ago by the then Lexington Yellow Cab Company. He isn’t sure of the exact purpose of the signs except that it had something to do with the charging of rates by their cab driver. He thought that fares beyond the sign were out in the country and were charged more. And he wasn’t sure exactly what years the posts were erected.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
A former staffer now working in California sent in this answer: Incidentally, the “Cab Meter Limit” signs marked the end of the city’s regulatory powers. Beyond that, you had to negotiate with the cab driver about price. Could be expensive, depending on how drunk you were.
