Is a “nab’ edible?
Question: I read in your paper recently that two former recreational therapists at Hazard ARH Psychiatric Center have filed a lawsuit alleging that they were fired for taking sodas and snacks to picketing nurses on the first day the nurses went on strike against Appalachian Regional Healthcare. Specifically, the snacks listed were couple of packs of ‘nabs’ and some pop.” My question is: what is a nab?
Answer: The answer to this comes from an recent article in the Greensboro, N.C. News and Record. The name can be traced back to the Nabisco Company. They had a pack of four crackers with peanut butter in the center stacked up that was labeled a ‘nab pack.’ So this may be where we get the expression, “a pack of nabs.” Asking for a pack of nabs north of the Mason Dixon line is like asking for an Ale-8-One outside of Central Kentucky. I didn’t mind answering this question, but don’t ask me what a “Moon Pie” with a “peanut round” is. I’ll save this for a later date.

My mother was a public school librarian. I earned a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Kentucky. The Herald-Leader hired me as a news assistant 25 years ago; soon after, I moved to the news research department, where I’ve been ever since. We used to clip newspapers. Now, almost all of our research is online. We've come a long way.
